Following the news that Rugby League Commercial has appointed a new ticketing provider for all Rugby League events in the UK, TheTicketingBusiness team is honoured to welcome Head of Ticketing at Rugby League Commercial, Rick Jurkiewicz as a guest speaker for this year’s Forum.

Rick started ticketing in the ‘pre-internet’ 1990’s selling for events in a contact centre in Nottingham, England. Working in each area of the business, Rick graduated to managing event day ticketing operations with See Tickets (Way Ahead) across the UK’s festivals, stadium shows and exhibitions. Following this, a move to Ticketmaster’s Manchester operation saw Rick take on leadership of the client services and event programming teams.

A career change into sports ticketing presented itself and, diving straight in without a second thought, Rick swiftly switched to managing ticketing systems for International Tournaments (EURO2012 – Poland & Ukraine, 2012 London Olympics, 2013 Rugby League World Cup and 2015 Rugby World Cup), before returning home to domestic football and rugby club Account Management roles and B2B Sales.

2016 saw him stepping back from supplier-side into Head of Ticketing with rugby league’s governing body, bringing with him a plan to deliver league-wide ticketing to the sport having spent a number of years considering how one might achieve this from within a major UK Sports governing body. The initial attempt failed to deliver the desired results and lessons were learned.

February 2024 – at the second attempt and with a somewhat different approach to identifying a supplier capable of delivering “league-wide” – a new vendor was secured and the project immediately launched into its first phase. Planning for the second and third phases are underway, with delivery planned in stages across the coming decade.

“For the tender we ditched paper (220 questions) in favour of video (20 questions). This method gave me 10x more detail per question, and eliminated copy/paste responses,” enthuses Rick. “It also told me far more about the technology company making the submission than a any ‘rinse and repeat’ doc ever could.”
